Large log on the disk, what to do?

Probably more so, if the log is impt and needs to be saved. Here are a few solutions I gathered -

single file, tar is not required, multiple files may be we would want to tar it also. We will tar/gzip and throw the output to stdout which will be piped to a pv (to show the progress) which is piped to nc -l (netcat listener)

(on source)
1. single large file
 gzip -c filename | pv | nc -l 4545
2. multiple large file or directory
tar czf - filename |  pv | nc -l 4545

(on target)

nc source-hostnmae 4545 > filename.gz  or nc source-hostnmae 4545 > filename.tar.gz

Need to write/speak

A horrendous crime done by insane men and a girl died brutally. We all hide our heads in shame! However, I am at loss of words at seeing

  • facebook updates with pictures of the girl, before and after and explicitly describing what happened.
  • news channels continuously debating and asking the public, 'what do you think about the incident?'
  • news channel going after the village and talking to every person in the village.
  • political parties running a race to give goodies like naming roads, day etc etc..
I am no saint, and probably even worse judge of things happening. But it surely feels like this society raped her again and again for their narrow objectives. TV trp ratings, political mileage, 2 minutes of limelight in front of a crowd.

RIP, probably this is a bad age.

RPM querry packages and there build arch

Most of the time rpm shows is the package name - version, but strips the build arch, ie. i386 or x86_64. Hence what we see are 2 similar package names and we wondering what is going on :)

$ rpm -qf /usr/bin/lsb_release
redhat-lsb-4.0-2.1.4.el5
redhat-lsb-4.0-2.1.4.el5

here is a way to see the arch use '--qf "%{n}-%{v}-%{r}-%{arch}\n"'

$ rpm -qf /usr/bin/lsb_release --qf "%{n}-%{v}-%{r}-%{arch}\n"
redhat-lsb-4.0-2.1.4.el5-x86_64
redhat-lsb-4.0-2.1.4.el5-i386

I thought I have to praise this song

mtv coke link

as sometimes you are touched with a song more than you can say, I am feeling the same right now. God knows the depth of the lyrics and the feeling with which Wadali Brothers can transform it. God bless them.

Reading the wikipedia, I felt like going to Guru ki Wadali, right now and pay my obeisances and sit and hear whatever they have to say for a long time.

Java/Oracle/JVM

I came back to Java some good 5 years later. last I used JDK was in 2006, when I was in my previous company. Java version was 1.6 (also called as java 6). its Java 7 now, and Oracle has bought Sun and own the JVM/JDK.

I went around for downloading JDK and was going through the licencing terms and found it very interesting.
